Project summary
Increasing the performance and new technologies in manufacturing compressors in aviation is a constant concern of blades machine manufacturers . Attempts to build compressors with high compression level (7-10) are recorded for several decades but in aviation closed applications are rarely.
There are some companies with interests in this type of development: Turbomeca (France), CIAM (Russia).
The project is developed in several phases with specifice activities that can be identified between architecture definition for sewer compressor,aerodynamic calculation of CFD methods, especially the stress analisys of bladed parts, CAD-CAM model development, parts manufacturing, performance measurement on test banch.
Interest in this type of machines can occur from both manufacturers for aircraft engines, where light weight is desired for propulsion systems in aviation, and manufacturers for industrial and defense sectors where reduction of production costs are strong reasons to succeed in a competitive market.

General Objective
a) Development of techniques, technologies and methods for the development of centrifugal compressors for aviation.
b) Development of a new type of centrifugal compressor with high compression ratio, bigger than 9, in one stage.
Objectives and Results
a) To validate CFD methods which estimate compressor performance with high precision - Max . 8% compared with measured results;
b) To validate parts manufacturing running at high peripheral blade speed (over 600 m / s);
c) To find new technical solutions in order to reduce the centrifugal forces requests for parts running at high speeds (over 40,000 rpm);
d) Measurements of compressor performance with an accuarecy better than 5% for the validation of calculation methods;
The innovative aspects of the project are the use of CFD codes to simulate the aerodinamic and stress fenomena, advanced manufacturing and control technologies of parts for a very high performence machine.
